Ayumu Nishizawa's birthday, May 15th, rolls around; after an unsatisfactory start (a 500-yen book card from her parents and an encounter with the air-headed Minamino Souya who is altogether unaware of her birthday), Ayumu resolves to be "proactive" about getting others to make her birthday a significant one. Meanwhile, Hayate makes cookies for Ayumu; Maria comments about his popularity with the girls. The remark vexes the oblivious Hayate, who had just named off the birthdays of most of his female acquaintances without thinking much of it. At Chiharu's suggestion, a reluctant Nagi consents to organize a surprise party for Ayumu. Nagi, with Hayate and many others in tow, meet up at Cafe Donguri to plan the party. Before most of them can disperse (in case Ayumu would catch wind of their plans), Ayumu walks into the cafe and announces the date, querying its significance to the group. Hinagiku and Hayate skillfully evade the question by supplying random historical events to answer her. Ayumu silently resolves to get Hayate, at the least, to remember her birthday. Hayate is left in a cold sweat over how to parry her efforts.
